A Lighthouse and Other Delights
I know. I’m a dirty liar. I said I wasn’t going to post anything until October 25. Well, I went on a road trip with a friend to Havre de Grace yesterday and decided I wanted to post some pictures on here. Since my comic is about a lighthouse, it’s absolutely relevant. Better an extra post than a missed post, right?
Anyway, here’s Concord Point Lighthouse! It was an overcast day, which works better for one of my camera’s fancy settings (of which I enjoy playing with too much).
The funny thing is, I’ve seen this lighthouse twice—from the outside. I have yet to have the opportunity to make it inside. I’ve been inside Barnegat Light and the Navesink Twin Lights, but those excursions were many years ago—class trips, to be precise.
I love the carved birds…
…and the real ones! The gulls seemed unfazed by people. We were able to walk up close and the gulls didn’t care.
It mystifies me how so many people can stand to stare at screens for hours on end—TV, phones, or otherwise. That bores me out of my mind. But I admit I could easily loaf around and gaze at water for an absurd length of time and be in a state of absolute bliss.
I even had the opportunity to do a swift sketch of the lighthouse.
And if you recycle your junk, you’ll be sure to make a crab grin. The sign is proof.
It was a peaceful and much-needed outing, both great to spend time with a good friend and get near some water—something for which I was long, long overdue. I tried to inhale as much salty air as possible, but alas, I cannot capture that smell and carry it with me wherever I go (I grew up near the shore and miss it very, very much). I could buy nautical goodies from the maritime museum’s gift shop, so I did that instead—faux scrimshaw box, a shell box, and a model ship of the Charles W. Morgan. They don’t smell salty, but you do what you can to feel close to water when you’re not.
Anyway, it was a splendid day!
